Casting my vote...
Tuesday, May 02, 2006

I'm back from Disney, suffering from the effects of what I'm calling my "Mickey Mouse hangover." Don't let the name fool you. This is no "mousey" syndrome. It can be identified by a general weariness caused by too little sleep, a feeling of achiness as a result of dragging a 4-year old throughout the parks and a slight sore throat resulting from exposure to a multitude of germies. Break out the Airborne - I don't have time for this!

Today was election day here in town. Based on the above, I'm sure I don't have to explain why I was not interested in taking time out of my day to go to the polls. Add a chilly, wet day, and I was even less enthused about the idea.

It was actually a pretty quiet election day - only a couple of contested races and one ballot question.

Maybe that explains why no one else came out to vote.

Okay, maybe not no one, but certainly not enough. at 6 pm tonight only 335 people had voted in our precinct. There are 9,000 voters in 4 precincts - so unless precinct 3 is particularly unmotivated, we are looking at a TERRIBLE turnout.

The volunteers at the high school were obviously really disappointed in the turnout. And I don't blame them.

I firmly believe that if you don't participate in the system, you don't have a right to complain about the results. If you are concerned about how your taxes are spent, how the schools are supported, how the town is run, how Library is supported, you need to vote.

I know most of the people reading this don't live in my town. But I hope you will all take the time to vote when the polls open in your town.

Agreed Kristin! Voting is like jury duty, one of our greatest rights as Americans. Yet no one wants to do it: there's no time, one vote doesn't really matter. I've heard the arguments. And I've been guilty of not voting in town elections in the past. When people complain they don't like the tax increases, the cuts at the schools, blah, blah, whine, whine, they should ask themselves what they can do to make the community a better place to live, work, and play. If you don't vote, you don't have the right to complain. I voted. And I'm happy our guy Phil Jack won.
