My TiVo is locked and loaded!
Friday, September 22, 2006

Erin is putting me to shame – writing regularly for the blog. I’m starting to feel Mommy guilt! How ridiculous is that?

The last couple of nights I have been enjoying the return of the fall weather and fall television… Dancing with the Stars, Simpsons, Bones, CSI: Miami have all returned. New shows abound – Seven, Studio 60 (love it), Reunion. My TiVos (yes, there are two) are locked and loaded and I am in television heaven.

Of course the most anticipated premiere was the return of Grey’s Anatomy. As I watched it last night I started to wonder why I like – no, love – the show. Yes, Dr. McDreamy has very nice hair, and Meredith is “dark and twisty” to a television-appropriate level. But let’s face it… these characters aren’t very nice. Recently I’ve found myself drawn to the Doctor’s estranged wife and George’s new girlfriend then to the main characters. And what is that vet thinking? He shouldn’t throw his hat in the ring for Meredith’s affections … he should pack it up and pick someone else. Because anyone with two eyes in their head can see, he’s in for a world full of hurt.

There are some shows that make me very uncomfortable, and yet I watch – Nip/Tuck is a good example. My husband hates this show and I can totally understand why. The characters have very few redeeming qualities. And yet, I’m strangely fascinated.

But that’s the thing about tv, isn’t it? We can sit, watch and judge. We don’t have to love the people in the shows. In fact, if we did, we may not watch. We just have to like them “enough.” Or find something about their lives and stories that allows us to escape the realities of ours for just a little while. So bring it on Meredith - I don't want to hang out with you, but I'm happy to watch.
