I'll Never Understand What Makes News
Wednesday, November 08, 2006

OK, as a professional publicist, I should have a handle on what news editors are looking for in the types of stories they cover on a daily basis. Like most clients and organizations I have worked with over the years, I regard the New York Times as one of the country's premier news organizations. So what's with this story about working mothers who travel? This is considered news?

I do some travel for work and I have for years. Even before I had children I relished some of my business trips. Especially those involving stays at nice hotels like the Ritz Carlton in Pasadena, California. But did I honestly enjoy staying at the Clarion hotel in Detroit? Not so much. Not all business travel is a mini-vacation.

What's more interesting than the article, is the commentary. My favorite comment is "Get over it ladies, it's about balance." Now that one really added to the dialogue for me.

Amen, my manic sister! Did I love driving 4 hours one way to Cleveland and staying at the crappy Residence Inn this week (where I had to take 2 different elevators and walk approximately 4 miles to get to my room)? Not really. Did I enjoy staying at the Renaissance last month and spending 2 glorious hours in a bookstore after a nice dinner? You betcha! Did I get eveil joy from my husband reporting that he was up 4 times with our daughter the night I was gone this week? Um, yeah. Travel generally sucks, but it allows me to work from home the rest of the time. There is the balance.
