What is it about reality shows that involve parents and children that are so enjoyable? Super Nanny, Wife Swap, Nanny 911… coming across any of these shows will generally stop me mid-speed surfing click.
My latest obsession is the new TLC show a ”TLC's House of Tiny Terrors”.The show, which is hosted by Karen “Duff” Duffy (not to be confused with teen sensation Hillary Duff), puts three families in one house for six days of observation and counseling by psychologist Dr. Tanya Brown.
Watching the first episode, I sat transfixed as the kids threw food, toys and tantrums. I had seen most of the problems displayed on the show within my own home, and could relate to the pain, exhaustion and confusion clearly felt by the parents. I also laughed as I saw familiar behavior patterns played out by this group of strangers – recognizing myself or my husband in almost everything the parents said during their counseling sessions.
Don’t get me wrong – I think these parents are crazy. Just like any one who decides to invite total strangers into their lives to view every idiosyncrasy, quirk and failing. But desperate times must make for desperate measures, right?
I’ve decided I’m not necessarily deriving pleasure from the pain of other parents – at least not much. I am fascinated by these shows because of their “honesty.” I use quotes, because I do recognize this is a 30-minute television show and creative editing can make for a very intriguing storyline. These parents who have the courage to take their parenting “failings” public and help us all learn from them also astound me.
I may be willing to tell you what I think each week, but you don’t see my kids on the show. That truly scares me.
