Mother's Day is May 13. No duh.
Tuesday, May 01, 2007

And the marketing machine is in full throttle. Everywhere I turn, I am seeing an ad for the perfect Mother's Day gift. What I want for Mother's Day does not cost a lot of money. It doesn't come wrapped in a tiny box (although, I must confess, a tiny Robin's egg blue box with a white satin ribbon might make my heart skip a beat). It's not something to read, or dig with in the garden. It doesn't come in a vase or in the shape of a plastic card.

What I want for Mother's Day is a day off.

No work. No deadlines. No dishes to wash or laundry to fold. No toys to put away. No meals to prep. No grocery shopping. No weeding or gardening. No errands to run. No business travel. No diapers to change. No arguing with little boys who think they run the household. No bills to pay. No paperwork to fill out.

What I want for Mother's Day is peace. And quiet.

Please just give me the day to myself. Let me lounge around and read a magazine in one sitting. Let me go get a facial and a pedicure and not worry that I have to get home before the polish dries. Let me have lunch in an adult restaurant and indulge in a glass of wine. Let me drive around in my car without hearing "Little People Songs for the Road" or "The Laurie Berkner Band." Let me recharge my batteries and I promise you will see a big smile on my face.

Don't get me wrong, brunch with the family is a nice idea. But in reality, it means I'd be correcting and cajoling, wiping mouths, picking bits of Belgian waffle off the floor. Basically, doing the same work I do almost every other day of the year.

I'm honoring myself this Mother's Day and I've got my husband on board with the plan. Now, the question is, what do I get my mother?

Can you bring your mom with you to get a mani and pedi and lunch? My mom would love to do those things with me if I could get her to go but being that it is a Sunday, I doubt I could drag her away from her weekly ironing! She complains about it but secretly I think she likes doing it!

Your day sounds wonderful! Can you get mom a gift certificate so she can go get a mani and pedi as well? Or bring her with you (if you can stand to spend the day with her!)

I'm with you on having a day off. It's what Mothers Day should be about not 'having to do'
Our Mothers Day is in March here in the UK so you've inspired me to state my wants for next year.
I also have two boys, Erin.
Good luck with finding something for your Mom.

According to Salary.com, stay-at-home mother's work worth $138,095 a year. See the article from Reuters for the full story.

I definitely think the taking care of the kids and household is a lot of work. I am doing my part to help out.

Even though every day should be Mother's Day (or Father's Day) in my opinion, May 13th is the day we choose to celebrate mothers around the world. Remember to show your appreciation to all the special women in your life who are mothers, on the day or any day. I and my kids are still looking for the gift for my wife.

In the meantime, here are some artistic, animated ecards for the occasion.

This kills 2 birds w/ 1 stone, You take the day off and give your Mom the kids. THey love having the grandkids to do with as they wish and it makes them appreciate the quite days when you have them. Then you both win. Of course have kids make her cards/pick flowers, etc.. before they go.
