A Rough Night's Sleep - By the Numbers
Friday, August 17, 2007

For some reason, I can never sleep when I know I have to get up early in the morning. I’m guessing it’s because I fear oversleeping (a definite possibility) and missing a client meeting. Being late due to traffic is okay. Being late because I couldn’t get my butt out of bed is not.

Last night was a particularly bad night for sleeping. Let’s run it by the numbers:

11:20 pm
I should have been in bed and asleep at least an hour ago, but I was busy transferring all my files from my old laptop to my oh-so-pretty MacBook Pro (more on that another day). Brush teeth, wash face and jump into bed.

11:25 pm
Steve threatens to go sleep in the guest room because there are crumbs in his bed. Jump back out in a flurry of pillows, comforters and sheets to make the bed.

11:30 pm
Back in bed. Lights out. Alarm set. Ready, set… make lists in my head. Think about client/friend’s web site I promised to evaluate, and the phone calls I have to make before we leave for vacation (doctor, teacher, cleaner, neighbor)

12:30 am
Tossing and turning. Head running with more thoughts, I consider just getting up to get things done, but realize that I cannot stay up all night.

2:30 am
Must have dozed off, but no deep sleep. It’s hot and I'm craving a little REM.

3:30 am (I think)
Sophie wakes up crying and yelling for mommy. Yes, I know I should ignore her and put her back to bed, but instead I bring her into our room – hey, it’s not like I’m getting any sleep!

4:30 am (again, fuzzy on this number)
Anders comes in to say he’s wet and so is his bed. Not surprising considering he refused to put on a Pull Up and he’s never (never, never, never) woken up with a dry Pull Up before. Oh, and he argued with me last night about drinking water. ‘Nuff said.

Too tired to get up to change his sheets, so after pulling on new Pull Up we allow Anders into our bed. Even in a king size bed this is getting tight.

5:30 am
Awake. It's still hot, but now I've been kicked in the head by Sophie and Anders' snoring is rattling the lamp shades. I know I have to get up at 6:00 am to get ready – I don’t have enough time to sleep, but am too tired to get up.

6:00 am
Good morning. Where is my coffee?

Hi Kristin,
How are you functioning! If I were you, my head would be on my desk..and I would probably be drooling or something!
I think you're going on vacation soon..and it sounds like you need it!

I work at Starbucks and have to get up at 3:30 am to open the store. I always have problems going to sleep on the nights before I work, but if I have the next day off, I pass out at 9:00 pm.

Ugh- I've had the same problem (I'm a pilot and have to get up at crazy hours all the time), and here's what I do that helps:
1. Keep a journal by my bed and write all those random thoughts and lists down before I go to sleep.
2. Set 2 or 3 alarms so I don't worry about oversleeping.
Unfortunately, it won't do anything for the bedwetting and head-kicking problems!
Hope you get to do some catching up this weekend!
