Ain't it ironic?

Monday, March 10, 2008

As many of you know, Erin and I have started to blog for RealSimple.com on the topic of Technology. My first post, "Why you should text message" was really well received and my enthusiasm for writing about tech and parenting is high.

In that first post I wrote:
"You also want to check your plan. It is predicted that “mobile messaging revenue across major markets will grow 15.7 percent in 2008 to $60.2 billion, up from $52 billion in 2007." Who is paying for that growth? You are my friend, in texting fees. It’s easy to avoid overpaying for text messaging with many providers offering unlimited text messaging for you or your entire family."

Is it totally ridiculous that I just quoted myself?

Anyway - this statement, which seemed so intelligent, just bit me in the butt this morning. My father walked into my office this morning, cell phone bill in hand, to tell me that I had set the world record for text messaging - over 1,300 for the month which cost over $100 because my plan only includes 300 text messages. Turns out my experiment with receiving friend-updates via Twitter blew out my plan.

As I sheepishly shrugged at him, he walked away saying "aren't you supposed to be writing about this stuff?"

So it turns out that you aren't paying that predicted $60 billion. I am.

Kristin,
Love the dialogue between you and your dad. Now flash forward a few years and you will be having the same discussion with your own kids about texting. If you want to hear about the world records for texting, then talk to any parent of a teen or preteen. At some point many of us mommies look at the cell phone bill and cry. And then we jump on the unlimited texting plan. Fortunately most schools have rules against texting during the school day. That encourages my kids to give their texting fingers (and brain) a break between 8 and 3.
